My Grandmother almost just fell for this same thing. Luckily I just happened to be visiting when they called.. These people need to be shut down.. how do I report them?

I just received the same phone call this afternoon. A girl with an accent and VERY POOR English by the name Sophie Lopez told me she was with the US Government Grant Department. She went through the whole speech about being offered this money by paying taxes on time. After giving them my credit card info and hearing that I had to call another number, which was (202) 905-0402, she told me to call and give them a Grant Approval #. I called the number (I kept telling her this better not be a scam), with a heavy feeling in my stomach, and a guy answered, said I would have to call back in about a half hour because the guy that completes the transactions was not available. I heard someone laughing in the background and when I questioned it (knowing it was scam from the time he answered the phone) he said "I don't know who that stupid person is in the background laughing". Absolutely IRATE at this point, I hung up the phone and immediately called my credit card company to report fraud and close the card. Wish I would have found these posts before I gave all the info.

I just got this call as well. It started as coming from 212-121-2121 and the person on the other end of the phone knew my name and address and obviously my home phone number. He had a heavy Asian accent and told me that his name was Patrick Alvarez. He said that the gov't was giving me this $7,000 grant because I've paid my bills on time for the past year (which was not the case as I have been unemployed until recently) and I didn't have a criminal record (which is true!). I refused to give him my account number and asked to speak with his supervisor (which was a woman also with an accent who told me that her name was Kelly Johnson). They told me that the gov't was giving me this money for my "own good" and neither of them could understand why I didn't want to give them an account number. I asked if I could receive a check in the mail instead of depositing it directly and they both said no, but that I could put the money on a debit card. My son had gotten a Visa gift card for Christmas (which he promptly spent) and so I gave them that number (it's not attached to any specific account and it's completely empty). They gave me a confirmation number and told me to call the 202-905-0402 number. When I called, I asked that person (another man with a heavy accent) if I could receive a check in the mail. He said yes, but that I would have to call back in 10 minutes because the confirmation number hasn't had time to "load up" yet. I called back in 10 minutes and spoke with "Mike Johnson" (I wonder if he's related to Kelly) who asked me for my confirmation number (which I gave him). He told me that I could certainly receive a check but first I had to make a $99 donation to an Asian country. He didn't know the name of the "charity" I had to make a donation to and he couldn't take the $99 out of the check he was going to send me (which I would receive tomorrow morning because he was going to call a gov't bank in my area and have it cut and sent to me as a priority (it's after 6pm here by the way). I told him that I couldn't make this donation tonight and was a little leery about doing so anyway and offered to make $1000 donation if he would simply take it out of the check he was going to have cut for me. He (not surprisingly) could not because "THE GOVERNMENT HAS ALREADY DONATED $15 MILLION AND THERE IS A LIMIT AS TO HOW MUCH THEY CAN DONATE". He did, however, tell me that I could call him back in a few days to finish the transaction (which both Kelly and Patrick told me I could not... that if I didn't do this all tonight, I would lose my $7,000). I tried calling the US Dept of the Treasury (which is where they all told me they worked for) and they are closed (usually open from 6am-7pm but likely closed due to the severe weather conditions which apparently do not affect Kelly, Patrick and Mike). I am going to try to call the US Dept of the Treasury tomorrow (GEN INFO# (202) 622-2000) and I'm CERTAIN that they are going to tell me that this is a SCAM!!!

I just got tha same call but I DID give them a Prepaid card number with a ZERO balance. Stupid me, I know. I won't be reloading it anymore. They told me that I would have to "donate" $99 to the Haiti Releif Efforts in order to get the money. When I told them that me and my husband are both unemployed they wanted to know how we get by. I told them we kill our meat and grow our veggies. I got told what a horrible person I am and that I need to "go get crabs"..... HOLY COW. I really lost it them. My poor little temper blew a head gasket.

My wife got this call and was sure it was a scam. The US Treasury giving away money. He wanted personal details. Sounded like a scam. He said she had to call 202-905-0402 to initiate a check. Bogus.Don't get fooled!

My wife got this same call today. She called the Treasury Dept. and they called the guy back with my wife on a conference call. He said they were SELLING Grants for $7,000.00. So the Treasury knows now if they didn't before.
(202) 905-0402
Caller said the U.S. Treasury wanted to give me $7,000. Gave me another number to call and a confirmation number to give them. Then he said he would need a bank account number or credit card number to deposit the money. I wouldn't fall for it, so he told me I could call the number and talk to the supervisor. They could mail me a check but it would take longer. I didn't call the number, but who calls up and gives you $7,000 for free!
(202) 905-0402

They been calling for Months asking for someone I never heard of. When I accidentally gave my name they called back a few days later asking for me. Same scam. "US Treasury" wants to give me $7000. Also gives code to use on callback. Must be a scam, can't be real. Wonder if the real Treasury Department knows people are pretending to be their agents?

Just got this call and I was sure it was a scam. The US Treasury giving ME money......Hahahaha. Sorry. He tried to convince me it was all well and good but when he said I had to call another number, that was the red flag. Hope no one falls for this.
