This is a total scam. The company that handles these calls for donations takes a huge cut of your contribution. There are better ways to contribute to police associations.

I got a call and the caller hung up with the caller ID showing the Tx Hwy Patrol. Goggle search shows it's a phone asking for contributions. The DPS has three associations which is made up of troopers and other certified officers with DPS. The first and oldest is the Department of Public Safety Officers Association, which provides lawyers, troopers in need, like medical bills, and life insurance. The DPSOA was formed around 1975. The DPSOA allows all commissioned officers to be a member. Therefore, a captain, lieutenant, and sergeant are members. The second association is the Texas State Troopers Association, organized around 1985. This association also provides lawyers, assistance to troopers and insurance. The TSTA was formed because of the conflict of interest during disputes between troopers and their supervisors. DPS supervisors are not allowed to be members of TSTA. In 1990, the executive director of the DPSOA, who is not an officer of DPS, was caught stealing funds. He was prosecuted and fired by the Board of Directors of DPSOA. Later, he formed the Texas Highway Patrol Association because phone solication was so great in obtaining monies from honest persons wanting to help troopers. THPA does have members who are troopers, but they do not know the true about what happen twenty years ago. DPSOA and TSTA are good and honest assocations made of DPS officers. I know, I was on the board of directors that fired the dishonest executive director. I am also a retired DPS officer.

I got the same phone call from this number. The caller ID said "TX HWY PATROL" and the man on the phone asked for a charitable donation for the families of officers killed in the line of duty. I will also call the Department of Public Safety in Austin.

281-209-9676 called my number but didn't leave message on my phone recorder. I became concerned that it might an emergency call because the caller ID reflected "TX HIGHWAY PATROL". Multiple attempts to redial the caller were repeatedly met with a busy signal. I just remembered that in Texas, our highway patrol is called "TX Dept of Public Safety" or "DPS". This might be some sort of non-affiliated charity scam.
