My husband received a call from this number and I freaked out that he had discussed private information with this individual. So I went back to the initial email we received from SSA after we submitted his application. I called the legitimate number (855) 249-4340 for claims questions. I asked them to verify the name of the agent and the extension she had provided. The SSA agent explained that although the caller ID shows this (301) number, it is a VoIP number out of MD that the SSA uses for outbound calls only. It is not a scam if the caller asks you to call them back at (855) 249-4340 and provides an extension.

I called the legitimate 800 number for social security and asked for a callback. The callback feature asked me to record my name, which I did. I got a callback but the caller I’d said Brittany Strine from this number. I have no idea whether it was my phone or the Social Security office that was hacked.
