So I went back to the initial email we received from SSA after we submitted his application. I called the legitimate number (855) 249-4340 for claims questions. I asked them to verify the name of the agent and the extension she had provided. The SSA agent explained that although the caller ID shows this (301) number, it is a VoIP number out of MD that the SSA uses for outbound calls only. It is not a scam if the caller asks you to call them back at (855) 249-4340 and provides an extension.
