I also received a message on my cell phone from this number at 8:45 p.m. asking me to call an 800 number and giving me a reference number. I instead called American Express using the number on the back of my card. The first operator told me that there was no activity on my account and to disregard the call b/c it was not from them and might have been phishing. I mentioned that I submitted a request for a credit limit increase about a week ago and was then connected with that department. They confirmed that they did initiate the call.So it appears to be appropriate but American Express could certainly do a better job of handling situations like this.

Don't listen to the people that say it's legit. They are part of the group who is trying to phish for information. I had the same thing happen and verified 100% that the number is not legit. The group of Indians that are running this scam did their homework and was able to****ociate the phone number to an American Express address but it is not legit and is a scam. I work for a service provider (providing services to Amex). The number 801-945-5000 is the outbound number that shows up on caller id when someone from Amex calls out. Even knowing this info I would still be hesitant to give out my personal information to someone who calls me asking for it.

This is American express for sure: I submitted an app to them last week; someone called from the number in question; I refused to give out info and the caller referred me to call 800 567 1083 to confirm. This number is listed on the American Express website as an applications line +an AMEX agent confirmed the call when I reached them. BTW- no one ever mentioned the patriot act. I think the posting in June by "me" is not legit.

I got a call from that number as well and I, too, was connected to my bank to verify my address and account number. I followed up by calling American Express after the call; they CONFIRMED that the call did indeed come from their Salt Lake City office. I hope that's helpful.
