About 808 Area Code:
Aloha. If you never thought any good can come from a volcano, read on. First, a bit of background on this exceptional area code, which serves over 1.4 million people across Hawaii and Wake Island. Hawaii’s special charm is reflected in its tourism industry, which attracted millions of visitors to its stunning beaches, volcanic landscapes, and unique cultural heritage in 2023. Recent developments in tourism include enhanced eco-tourism initiatives that seek to preserve Hawaii’s natural beauty. In addition to tourism, Hawaii's economy benefits from agriculture, notably in the cultivation of sugarcane, coffee, and tropical fruits, alongside a burgeoning tech sector, particularly in Honolulu.
The state’s efforts to promote renewable energy have also been admirable. In fact, in many ways Hawaii is leading the way when it comes to clean energy. Each of its six main islands operates on its own independent electrical grid. The state currently derives 32% of its energy from renewable sources. Among these, 6.25% of Hawaii’s electricity is generated by seven wind farms. Hawaii is also seeing a rise in electric vehicles, with electric cars accounting for 15% of new vehicle sales last year. Now, for that fun volcano fact: On the Big Island, approximately 30% of energy is sourced from geothermal power, using heat from a plant located near the Kilauea volcano, which erupted in September 2023.
